Built as a hub for supplies necessary to complete the Illinois and Michigan Canal, which was opened for commercial use in 1848, the Gaylord Building was restored in the 1980s to serve as a museum on the historical canal. Its large permanent exhibit connects the creation of the canal with the subsequent economic growth that took place in the northeastern portion of the state; other floors of displays are temporary in nature, filled with relevant photographic collections and historical artifacts. The museum sits right on the bank of the canal in downtown Lockport, just one of the sites on the 75-mile historical driving trail along the canal.
Open Tue. - Sat. 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; Sun. noon - 5:00 p.m.; Closed Mon.
Free.
